  • Abstract: The role of doctors’ religious faith and ethnicity in taking ethically controversial decisions during end-of-life care

An Abstract from the English Journal of Medical Ethics:

    Background and Aims

The prevalence of religious faith among doctors and its relationship with decision-making in end-of-life care is not well documented. The impact of ethnic differences on this is also poorly understood. This study compares ethnicity and religious faith in the medical and general UK populations, and reports on their associations with ethically controversial decisions taken when providing care to dying patients.

  • Questions and Answers About the ‘Ground Zero Mosque’ From FactCheck.org

Q: What are the facts about the proposed cultural center and mosque near New York’s former World Trade Center?

A: We answer questions we’ve been asked most often by readers about the controversial project.

    FULL QUESTION

A clearly divisive issue has been brewing in America as well as the headlines, concerning the creation of a mosque/community center (relatively) near the site of the September 11 tragedy, ground zero. The facts have been obscured by all sides and replaced by emotional scare tactics and slippery-sloping, in argument for and against. I was hoping FactCheck.org would be able to shed light on the issue in an article with particulars, such as the individuals and organizations involved, the actual location, and the truths and lies presented by public figures concerning the case.

  • Portraits in Disguise and Imaginary Lives

Dressing up for your portrait has been a technique and ‘accepted as a norm’ according to a section of England’s National Portrait Gallery, Portraits in Disguise:

“The idea that the portrait isn’t some form of disguise is interesting, after all it is always an interpretation of a presence. There is no guarantee that the sitter is not ‘naturally disguised’ when sitting for a portrait, this being often a peculiar and sometimes difficult experience to submit to.”

“Facial expression is so often a disguise — how many people recall opening a gift in front of the donor and feigning delight when disappointment is the real emotion provoked by the offering?”

  • Time to Reconsider Texting? Using Daily Text-Message Reminders to Improve Adherence With Oral Contraceptives

We just spotted one of those television ads  to discourage texting … in this case, when driving a car. It was a sobering ad as the narration was performed by the parent of a young woman who did not surive the  outcome of her multiple actions. Now a respected journal points is currently running an article that presents an example of a text reminder’s lack of effectiveness.  We don’t subscribe to the Obstetrics & Gynecology Journal, but the abstract from this randomized controlled trial succinctly states results and conclusions:

Mother Jones: Raising Cain and Consciousness
    by Simon Cordery

Mary Harris Jones was a late bloomer. Only in her seventh decade did she became the legendary Mother Jones, a paid organizer for the United Mine Workers who was labeled the most dangerous woman in America in 1902.

It would be accurate to call her ‘mythical’ if only because so many of the stories surrounding her and which she told about herself were in fact myths. One of the tasks Cordery takes on in this book is to separate fact from fiction, though he concludes that the actual facts are sometimes less important than the myths.

  • Why Doesn’t the Social Page Tell the Better Story?

    by Nichola Gutgold

Not long ago I started my Sunday morning like I always do, drinking my husband’s ridiculously delicious coffee and immersing myself in my very good  local newspaper, The Morning Call, and the eminently cherishable The New York Times. My daughter once observed the joy with which I opened The Times is ” like chocolate for you, Mom, isn’t it?”

Indeed.  And I love almost every section, but, if The New York Times TV commercial asked me,  “How many sections are you fluent in?” I would say without hesitation the Weddings and Celebrations page.
